When coal extraction operations come to an end, the
land is restored as part of a pre-agreed restoration plan. Scottish
Coal understands the importance of restoring sites to the highest
standards.
The restoration plan vary from site to site.
In some areas it is preferable that the site is returned
to its original land use (e.g. farming) and the original contours,
hedgerows and woodlands are restored.
At other sites, more imaginative
restoration and after-use plans can be favoured including, new land-art
projects, recreation and leisure, ponds and wetlands, nature reserves,
industry or housing, golf courses or country parks.
Forward planning and imaginative proposals
can act as a spur for new development, local employment and new
opportunities.
