The exploration process starts by examining charts and old records
to identify potential reserves of coal.
To confirm any findings,
drilling is undertaken to extract rock cores from deep beneath the
ground. The cores are examined by our geologists to determine the
extent and quantities of coal reserves.
Once the information has been processed, the Scottish Coal team
use the latest technologies including computer-aided 3D design modeling
software, to start designing the opencast site and how it will be
worked to extract the coal.
This mine design planning stage is important
to our understanding of how the operations might affect local communities
and the environment (see planning & assessment)
